Abstract

Taiwanese desktop PC industry's shipment volume stood at approximately 14.0 million units in the second quarter of 2011, up 7.9% sequentially compared with the first quarter and up 3.4% year-on-year compared with the same period in 2010. The industry's sequential and year-on-year advances were attributed to the deferred shipments of Intel Sandy Bridge-based products and replacement demands for new desktop PCs in the enterprise segment in the second quarter, traditionally an off-season. Intel's Sandy Bridge chipsets encountered design error upon release, and Intel recalled those defective products immediately for re-assembly. Owing to the shipping time by sea freight, the re-launch of such chipsets, however, still caused the deferred shipments of some products, which were originally set to hit the market in the first quarter of 2011.
